Beginner’s Guide: Building Your First D&D Character
Creating your first tabletop character can feel intimidating, but it comes down to a few simple decisions. This guide walks you through them in order so you can get to the table fast.
1. Pick a Class That Matches How You Want to Play
Want to be in the thick of the fight? Try a Fighter or Barbarian. Prefer magic and utility? A Wizard or Cleric. Like talking your way out of trouble? A Bard or Rogue. Your class shapes most of what you’ll do each session.
2. Choose a Race and Background
These add flavor and small mechanical bonuses. Don’t overthink it — pick what sounds fun. A memorable backstory matters more than perfectly optimized stats.
3. Assign Your Ability Scores
Put your highest numbers in your class’s key ability. The rest can be spread to cover survivability and skills. Most groups use a standard array, which keeps things balanced for newcomers.
That’s it — grab your dice and you’re ready to play. Welcome to the table.
